Cup profile:
Bait Yaseen is a village located in Hayma Dakhiliya, known for its rich heritage of growing coffee. Coffee is the most important crop for farmers in the village, grown at 2000-2200 metres above sea level.
Hayma Dakhiliya is a coffee growing region located in the west of Sana’a, it is one of the governorate’s most well-known regions. There are 83,000 people living in the 11 villages, which make up the region, of which, 400 families farm coffee. Alongside coffee, the farming families in Hayma Dakhiliya grow corn, potatoes and qat. The villages are found high in the mountains at an altitude of 2,200 metres. The weather is mild and rainy in the summer months, and cold in winter. But this is what gives the coffee farmers such fertile soil, rich in minerals and plenty of aquifers. It is believed that some of the coffee trees are over 100 years old. The trees have adapted to the harsh mountainous environment and continue to produce high-quality coffee with fresh, fruity hints. However, coffee trees have been struggling with disease, impacting the region’s outturn of coffee cherries and overall yield. Low yield is a problem affecting many in the Yemeni coffee industry. However, Hayma Dakhiliya is particularly struggling with this issue and as a result, the region has the lowest yield in Yemen.
